Startups promoting active transportation for better cities

#Startup #Incubation

Cities that promote walking and cycling over private vehicles have also been found to be more attractive, with less congestion and a higher quality of life.

During the past few years we have been witnessing the emergence of new “easy” and non-sportive types of mobility: car-sharing, car-pooling, the development of the autonomous vehicle and so on. All these innovations help in decreasing the CO2 emission but still...they continue generating congestion, stress… By developing these types of solutions we almost forgot about the basics of mobility like the good old bike or even the simplest of them all : walking. We have developed infrastructures for cars and forgot to integrate along the way bike trails. But how can we improve the use of active mobility? How can we determine citizens want to ride bikes again as a main mean of transport in the city?

At European level, there are a lot of incentives to innovate in the mobility sector. Since 2002, the European Mobility Week focuses on a topical theme. Towns and cities register their participation in EUROPEANMOBILITY to showcase their commitment to innovation and to clean and sustainable urban transport.  France is recognized as a startup nation, it’s the land of many startups on different themes such as fintech, proptech, logistics & mobility, etc. For more than 4 years, the Rolling Lab by Paris&Co is the cocoon of logistics and urban mobility startups supporting the development of innovative solutions.

This year’s theme of the European Mobility Week put the spotlight on safe walking and cycling and the benefits it can have for our health, our environment, and our bank balance! Active transport modes such as walking and cycling are emission-free and help to keep our hearts and bodies healthy.

On the occasion of this year’s European Mobility Week, why don’t we take a look at a few startups incubated by the Rolling Lab that promote through their products and services  active transport solutions and mobility safety that change the city landscape by helping parisians giving up at their private vehicles and adopt cycling or walking as their main means of transportation.

Cycling may be sometimes dangerous? Not anymore! Galanck is THE startup to follow! Galanck promotes security for bike rides and makes you want to take your bike everyday ! Galanck developed “The Galuchon” a connected GPS backpack which allows you to be guided through vibration and warn all the other actors in mobility behind you of your direction.

The renew of an era, the renew of bikes? The Rolling Lab startups understood that bikes should be easier to ride and electric ! For instance, VelyVelo is improving the riding experience for last mile delivery staff by offering to its customers a 2 year subscription to use an electric bike in their daily activities. The startup is also developing a side offer for hotels so that tourists can use electric bikes while visiting Paris instead of renting a car to do so.

VUF wants to make each ride as simple as possible for last miles delivery. The startup developed modular electric cargo bikes which enable to transport heavy and large cargo. The 3 wheels, the electric assistance and the tilting system make it a safe, comfortable and stable solution.

Bikes, tricycles… Where to park them without being afraid they could be stolen?  We always wanted our bikes to be parked in a safe place and not to wait for us on the sidewalk ! Cycloove & Nielsen Concept developed parking spots to keep your bikes safe ! In addition to this, full services are proposed by these 2 startups: showers, lockers… The difference between them? Nielsen Concept proposes a box installed outside and for every kind of active mobility (tricycle, bikes, scooters…), while Cycloove converts basement slots (parkings for exemple) into a place able to safely store bikes .

And now, the so much debated electric scooter that we can see nowadays everywhere in the city. Walking in Paris is like walking around these scooters, free floating, they are everywhere! Besides, the users don’t respect the safety rules to follow while riding or for parking the scooters, nor a safety kit to wear… Scootypark & Wetrott have the answer to all these problems ! They propose electric scooters parked in terminals. These 2 startups want to avoid scooters on the sidewalk and prevent security for all the rides : they include safety kits for every rental. WeTrott is a 15 scooters terminal that can be  installed outside any building and that addresses everyone in mobility. Scootypark is a 3 scooters terminal installed inside buildings and doesn’t need any operation, usually addressing employees of companies that install the terminal.

The active mobility landscape is changing, there are more and more actors determined to turn urban mobility sustainable and clean and these parisian based startups are definitely bringing a new breath of fresh air in the congested city of Paris.
